Tonsupa is a small resort community an hour south of the Esmeraldas airport that has grown considerably in recent years as wealthy Quiteños can now reach the beach in just over 4 hours. Tonsupa boasts a number of impressive projects, but none compare to the Playa Azul Resort for its scope and luxury.
Ecuador has enjoyed a great deal of international attention over the past few years for its incredible beachfront properties. Towns like Playas, Salinas, Manta, and Bahia de Caraquez have received the lion`s share of international buyers, while the province of Esmeraldas has somehow managed to stay off the radar. A visit will leave you scratching your head as to why.
Playa Azul features two 20-storey towers, the first of which is completed and sold out and the second currently under construction. It boasts nearly 100m of direct beach access on the town`s northwestern corner.
Entering Playa Azul, one feels that they are entering a luxury hotel rather than a condo building, The exterior features colorful gardens while the condo lobby features 16 foot ceilings, a fountain, and a 24 hr guard to welcome you home upon arrival. Building B features a variety of floor plans including a 1BR, 2BRs, 3BRs, 3BR Deluxe, 4 BRs and 2 Penthouse units. All units come with a private terrace with spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean and the pool/patio area below.
Playa Azul condos come complete with finishings designed to be both luxurious and easy to maintain. The condos include fully equipped kitchens with induction stoves and high ceilings (10 ft) are utilized to provide natural ventilation from the cool ocean breezes.
Worried about infrastructure? Don`t be. In the event of shortages, an electric generator is available to provide power to Playa Azul, and water reserves of 10 days are maintained at all times. Playa Azul even maintains a free WIFI area on the patio.
Outside, you will find no shortage of things to do. In addition to the expansive infinity pool and children`s pool, Playa Azul offers tennis and volleyball courts, a spa/sauna/jacuzzi, a fully equipped gym, a game room, a restaurant/café, and a bar. There is a large oceanfront deck where you will feel free to take in the 300+ days of sun each year, and an inviting hammock area where you can cool off in the shade for an afternoon siesta. About the Area
The beach town of Tonsupa is located 26 km southeast of the city of Esmeraldas and its regional airport which receives direct flights from and Guayaquil 8 times each day. It is one of the longest stretches of beaches in the area, stretching approximately 4 kilometers. Its temperature ranges from 21º C to 32º C (70 ºF to 90ºF) and is proud to be known as the sunniest beach in all of Ecuador. The beach is lined with coconut and palm trees, and as the tide goes out, you will always find an incredible variety of exotic shells, sea crustaceans and seabird flying overhead.
This beautiful beach meets all modern infrastructure needs. The main road into town as well as the Malecon which leads to Playa Azul are all paved, with dirt roads making up the rest of the community. Road conditions remain very good, as Tonsupa doesn´t receive the intense rainy season that is found in most tropical destinations. Tonsupa enjoys spectacular sunsets nearly every evening and is preferred by families for its tranquility and pleasant ocean breezes.
The cuisine in Tonsupais, as you will imagine, largely comprised of delicious seafood. The locals utilize coconut milk to make andelicious sauce that is served with fish, shrimp, calamares, crabs, and even lobsters. Meals are served with rice, French fries, and plantains. And like most Caribbean countries the fruits are amazing in both their quality and variety. Finally, the Malecon offers a wide variety of restaurants and coctails – a great way to relax and spend your day.
The town is very slow during the weeks, but on the weekend, dozens of Quiteños arrive and the beaches are full of Ecuadoreans playing volleyball, paragliding, and engaging in a wide variety of watersports. Windsurfing is popular here, and during the whale season, sailboat charters are available for whale watching tours.
Tonsupa is also home to a local population of artists offering jewelry, clothes, and other accessories, which give the region its local flavor and culture.
